I am a Brainspotting Practitioner which is a neuroexperiential model based on neuroscience of how overwhelming events are stored, accessed and modulated.

 

Often our higher order thought processes (conscious awareness, reasoning, language systems of the neocortex) block access to much deeper layers of the brain where fight/flight reflexes and memory fragments are stored (multisensory, often without words). Brainspotting utilizes attunement, intentional focus and eye positioning to access deeper encodings and new connections which can produce shifts rapidly at a neurobiological level compared with talking alone.

Brainspotting is supported by a growing body of research including EEG brain scans that demonstrate neurological changes equivalent to accelerated mindfulness (i.e. more harmonious electrical activity). This method of therapy was also surveyed to be the most effective intervention for treating parents, teachers and community members affected by the Sandy Hook school shooting tragedy in 2012 (full report). It can be helpful for all ages from children to adults.

 

Brainspotting is suitable for diverse populations and all neurotypes supporting those who process verbally and nonverbally (e.g. imagery, sensory) where . It is a fascinating technical tool that enhances neuroplasticity and gently catalyzes deeper integration, relief and regulation. (Curious how it works?)
